We’re turning Appalachian liabilities into climate assets. Across Southeast Ohio, thousands of gas wells are quietly leaking methane—legacy industrial risks left behind long after the energy transition moved on. Iron Root Development identifies these leaking wells, seals them forever with high-grade cement, and converts that avoided pollution into carbon credits you can buy right here. By purchasing our credits, you aren’t just checking a box; you are directly funding the restoration of our local land and ensuring a cleaner future for our community. Every credit you purchase is methane that stays in the ground where it belongs.

The Founder & Philosophy

Grant Gibson is the founder of Iron Root Development, a platform dedicated to engineering the technical and financial standards required to reduce fugitive emissions. With a career defined by the successful intersection of heavy industrial development and institutional finance, Grant specializes in building the “iron-clad” frameworks that turn environmental liabilities into high-value assets.  Before establishing Iron Root Development, Grant spent over a decade as the Co-Founder and Chief Development Officer of Synthica Energy. As the lead architect of Synthica’s development engine, he spearheaded the conceptualization and scaling of advanced anaerobic digestion infrastructure across North America. His strategic vision turned a technical challenge—organic waste management—into a scalable, bankable asset class.

This period of leadership culminated in a landmark achievement: the successful acquisition of Synthica Energy by Goldman Sachs Asset Management. This exit served as a definitive market validation of Grant’s ability to develop infrastructure that meets the rigorous due diligence, transparency, and ESG requirements of the world’s leading financial institutions.

Defining the New Standard

The current carbon market is largely reactive—focusing on plugging wells only after they have reached a state of total failure. At Iron Root, we are defining a new standard: Proactive Asset Stewardship. We believe that the highest-integrity carbon credit isn’t generated by cleaning up a disaster, but by preventing one.

By establishing rigorous new protocols for Intermediate Abatement, we transition marginal infrastructure into managed assets. Our methodology moves beyond the “Plugging-only” model to include precision technical maintenance and “Early-Retirement” strategies that deliver immediate, measurable methane reductions.

The Iron Root Standard is built on three pillars:

  • Additionality through Optimization: We target wells that are legally “active” but functionally stagnant, where traditional maintenance has been abandoned. Our intervention creates clear, additional climate benefits that would not occur under “business-as-usual” operations.

  • Direct-Measurement Verification: We replace industry-standard “leak factors” and estimates with localized, direct-measurement data. Every ton of methane is managed by Iron Root is backed by empirical field evidence.

  • Basin-Specific Rigor: We don’t apply generic models to the Appalachian Basin. Our standards are tuned to the specific geological and mechanical realities of Southeast Ohio, ensuring that every project is permanent, verifiable, and safe.

The Process

How a Leaking Well Becomes a Carbon Credit

Most carbon credits are based on things that might happen, like planting trees that could eventually burn down. Iron Root credits are different. They are based on a permanent engineering solution to a current, physical problem.

1. The Problem: Legacy Leaks

Thousands of old gas wells across Southeast Ohio have been orphaned. Long after they stop producing energy, they continue to leak methane—a greenhouse gas over 80 times more potent than CO2—directly into our atmosphere.

2. The Solution: The Permanent Seal

We identify these emitters and bring in heavy equipment to plug them. We clean out the wellbore and pump in thousands of pounds of high-grade cement, sealing the gas deep underground. Once the well is capped and the land is restored, that methane remains in the underground formation.

3. The Calculation: Measuring the Impact

We calculate exactly how much methane would have leaked over the next 20 years if we hadn’t stepped in. Using the BCarbon protocol, we convert that avoided pollution into a specific number of carbon credits.

4. The Result: A High-Integrity Credit

When you buy a credit from our us, you are purchasing a verified “receipt” for that avoided methane.

  • It’s Permanent: Once a well is plugged with cement, it cannot “un-plug.”

  • It’s Measurable: We use advanced sensors (like TDLAS lasers and LiDAR) to prove the leak existed and ensure it has stopped.

  • It’s Local: Your purchase directly funds the rigs and crews working in the Appalachian hills of Ohio.

Impact

Immediate Action

Methane is over 80 times more potent than CO2 over a 20-year period. A single marginal well can leak an average of 0.13 metric tons of methane annually—the warming equivalent of driving a car over 25,000 miles.

  • The Impact: Our “Maintenance-First” approach halts these emissions today, rather than waiting years for state-funded plugging programs. We convert fugitive methane into high-integrity carbon offsets that meet the most rigorous “additionality” standards.

Financial De-Risking & Asset Recovery

Environmental liabilities are the “silent killers” of balance sheets. Unmanaged legacy wells represent millions in potential regulatory fines, plugging costs, and litigation risks.

  • The Impact: Iron Root transforms these “stranded” liabilities into performing carbon assets. We help operators and landowners clean up their portfolios, improve ESG ratings, and unlock new revenue streams from the voluntary carbon market.

Restoring Appalachian Landscapes

Legacy wells don’t just affect the air; they threaten groundwater, soil health, and local safety.

  • The Impact: Through technical swabbing and site stabilization, we protect the aquifers and ecosystems of Southeast Ohio. We ensure that the land remains a productive resource for the next generation, restoring the balance between industrial heritage and environmental health.

Impact by the Numbers

  • 80x: The increased warming potential of Methane vs. CO2.

  • 1,500+: Wells identified for optimization within our primary 50-mile service radius.

  • Zero-Waste: Our goal for fugitive emissions in every project area we manage.

  • Permanent: Every metric ton of carbon avoided through Iron Root Development is verified and retired permanently.
